Alasdair Gold has revealed that Fernando Llorente could still stay at Tottenham for the 2019/20 season.
What’s the story?
During a QnA for Football.London, Gold, the outlet’s Spurs correspondent, was asked about the Spaniard’s situation.
Llorente is currently without a club having opted not to renew terms in north London this summer, and Napoli are interested in his services.
However, a new deal with lower terms is “on the table” says Gold, and the club could dump someone like Georges-Kevin Nkoudou to make room for the striker in their squad.
The player would likely re-sign if he “cannot find himself a better deal elsewhere,” says Gold.
Troy Parrott impressed in pre-season, but the young Irishman is only 17 and Gold suspects Mauricio Pochettino could need some extra back-up in the short-term.
Another coup from Levy
If the club can convince Llorente to do a U-turn on his exit and return on a lower pay packet, then it’s yet another masterclass from Daniel Levy.
Fans have been lauding the club chairman for everything from Fulham’s leadership being unhappy with the Ryan Sessegnon negotiations to Amiens being hacked for their cut of the Tanguy Ndombele fee, and this would be another reason for praise.
Llorente is not perfect, far from it in fact. He is slow, will turn 35 mid-way through this campaign and only scored 13 times for the club in 66 games.
However, his experience is a blessing for Pochettino’s developing squad. The target man has been there and done it all, winning eight major trophies, including a World Cup with Spain and Europa League with Sevilla.
Re-injecting this winning mentality into the squad can certainly do no harm, and let’s not forget that without the 34 year-old downing Manchester City with his hip, we wouldn’t have even got Lucas Moura’s iconic performance in Amsterdam.
Convincing Llorente to re-sign on lower terms than his original deal would be a win on and off the pitch for Levy and Pochettino.
